The trotter Peterwah was responsible for a brilliant performance in beating a select field of pacers in tho August Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Handicapped on 4m 28s, Peterwah had to register the fast time of 4m 23 4-5s to win, and he thus established a New Zealand record for two miles for a straight-out trotter. Tho previous record for a straight-out trotter stood to the credit of Escapade, who stepped 4m 27 l-5s to annex the Easter Handicap at Addington last year. Other trotters with fa at times to their credit over two miles are Reta Peter (4m 28 2-os) and Whispering Willie (4m 28 2-Ss). Peterwah's record is one that may Btand for • many years, although, with the general improvement in the breed, the Dominion may produce some champion trotters in the years .to come. The performance compares very favourably with the best that have been registered by our leading pneers and stamps Peterwah as a champion trotter. It seemed to be the general opinion that tho chestnut was in need of a race, and he therefore sprang a big surprise in winning in the fashion he did. Peterwah is an aged horse by Etawah from Janova and was imported from America by R. C. Pisken. who effected his purchase as a yearling. Like many good horses, Peterwah has been in the limelight since ho began racing and has previously shown splendid form. This is the sixth season he has been racing and his winnings now total £5759. WINNERS GO FAST. Weather and track conditions must have been porfect for time-making at Addington on Saturday because fast times were recorded in the various racos and all the winnerg improved upon their handicaps The following table showing the handicaps and times recorded by the winners will illustrate the margins of improvement: Time ImproveHandicap. A feature of tho racing at Addington on Saturday was the success of favourites, no fewer than five being successful. The favourites to score were Maxegin, Kempton, Jackie Audubon, Native Prince and Western King.
When J. Shaw left for Christchurch with a team of horses for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's August meet, ins ho was very hopeful about the prospects of Native Prince and Western Kine. The pair realised expectations by winning 011 Saturday and scored in Buch stylo as to suggest ' that they may achieve more success soon. Western King's performance must have been very meritorious, as he is reported to have lost a good deal of ground at the start. METROPOLITAN MEETING. TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME. THE LIST OF ACCEPTANCES.
