THE COST OF GOLF.

Sir,—The Rev. A. M. Aspland has referred to the. "a'ppalling fact" that England, Scotland and Ireland spend more on golf balls each year than the united churches contribute to foreign missions. Why the comparison is made with golf bails, particularly by a, Presbyterian, who ought to know that Scotland foisted golf on the world, one does not know. Why not with "plus fours" or football boots or silk stockings and garters, or shaving cream or jazz records or spring onions ? What I want to say. however, is that the dutiable value of "sporting, gaming and athletic requisites" imported in the last three years was £120,062, £120,548 and £115,253. I regret that" these figures are not double. They would mean that twice the number of people played games and that the race would be more worthy of setting an example to the "heathen." Athlete.
