PROBLEMS OF DRAINAGE.

RUAKURA SWAMP AREA. AMALGAMATION ADVISED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —O'-SN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Monday. The amalgamation of the drainage boards affected was offered as the solution to the problem connected with the drainage of the Kuakura swamp, in a reply received by the Hillside Drainage Board from the Prime Minister. Mr. Coates wrote:—"The request for a subsidy for improving the Komakorau Stream has been considered, but the Minister of I>ands advises that his department considers it would be quite unreasonable to grant individual subsidies, which very likely would result in one area benefiting at the expense of another lower down.

"The boundaries of the various districts are in most cases unsuitable, and one district is so dependent on another for an outlet that much trouble and dispute has been caused. The only practicable solution is by-way of an amalgamation of all the boards, when favourable consideration would be given to subsidy requests likely to serve the whole system of a comprehensive scheme."
