SCHOOL SAVINGS BANKS.
Sir, —Mr. Tiaman is to be heartily congratulated on his very able letter, wherein he presents the teachers' side of the savings bank scheme. While, however, acknowledging the importance of all this, I wish to more particularly draw attention to the public criticism from the chairman of the school committee, which these very excellent teachers have had to undergo for presumedly daring to disagree on the value or otherwise of the scheme. This would not have been so bad had the staff had an opportunity of replying, but I understand that this year no representative of the teachers attends committee meetings. Surely when parents remember all that Belmont school owes to its teaching staff such criticism seems at least unnecessary. In fact, it is this sort of thing that creates friction, and friction between a school committee and the teaching staff certainly does not react favourably on the children whom both parties are there to serve. A Parent.
