FAVONA ROAD BUS SERVICE.

Sir, —As one of the down-trodden outer suburbanites, I should like to voice an emphatic protest against the crushing tyranny of the City Council's mailed fist. This body, as announced in the Herald of June 27, has yet again . refused a licence to the Transport Company to run a through bus service in the Favona Road district, Mangere, to the city, via Onehunga. This route was successfully served by the company some 12 months ago, until driven off by the City Council, which replaced it by a service of its own. This service, run with the usual disregard to the public's requirements and the usual system of waste, was naturally unprofitable. It was tried as "a feeder service to Onehunga for a time, and then discontinued as also unprofitable. There is a certain paradoxical note in the council offering to grant the Transport Company a licence for a feeder service after finding it non-laying. And yet the council claims to be phiianthropically protecting the private company from running a losing venture! It wants to get the people to the trams, but the people cannot be expected to walk several miles to do so, and a feeder service will not pay. Therefore, how could an efficient and quick through service with a penal fare affect the trams ? Can anyone imagine a more perfect example of the dog in the manger fable ? Mr. Allum callously remarks, "Let them learn to use a feeder service." Will he run his service again to educate them ? Through services from Mangere and Great South Road routes are granted licences, so why not Favona Road, which has proved, under efficient management, to be a paying proposition ? M. Matthews.
