POLICEMAN ASSAULTED.
FOUR YOUNG MEN FINED. AGE SAVES THEM FROM PRISON. Described as having "Dutch courage in their numbers," Jack Charlton Kelly and Gordon Kelly, oi Ponsonby, and Claude Howard Manning, of Newton, were each fined £5 ill the Police Court yesterday on charges of obstructing a policeman who was arresting George Waldron on a charge •of using obscene language, Waldron, who had struggled violently, was fined £5.
Imposing the penalties, thS magistrate, Air. F. K." Hunt, said Jarrikinism bad been reported before in that district. "What happened," he said, "was that these* young fellows cot drink into them, were corrected for indiscreet behaviour by a constable, resented it and attacked him Well, this Court is not going to have that, sort of thing going on. They seemed to have had Dut-ch courage. Only their age stops me from sending them to prison." Plain-clothes Constable Elms said when he arrested Waldron he became violent and the constable threw him to the ground. "His companions then seized me and dragged me away, thus letting Waldron free," he added. Waldron again became violent, and was thrown to the ground a second time. Someone then shouted, "Gek into him, boys," and witness was immediately surrounded by the men, who punched him from all sides. Another constable then came on the scene and the men were arrested.
