CONDITIONS IN CITY.

LITTLE DAMAGE DONE.

HEAVY SEAS ON COAST. SEVERAL STEAMERS DELAYED. Very boisterous conditions prevailed m Auckland yesterday. A strong wind was blowing from the south-west. Heavy showers fell at frequent intervals in the morning, but eased somewhat in the afternoon and evening. Ihe wind blew in fierce squalls and buildings and houses in exposed positions were severely shaken.

Damage to property was not extensive. A number of business signs in Queen Street near the Dilworth Building were demolished by the gale. In the Civic Square a hoarding was levelled to the ground, and some dilapidated fences in Parnell met with tho same fate.

A house in Marine Parade, Heme Bay, suffered damage, a portion of the roof being blown off. The weather was exceptionally stormy on the west coast. Owing to the rough soas the Manukau Bar was unworkable, the auxiliary schooner Isabella de iramo and the steamers Kaitoa and Arapawa being barbound in consequence. Last evening the conditions had moderated considerably. The Katoa left Wellington on Wednesday evening and was due at Auckland this morning. She reported by wireless last evening that she was being delayed by a heavy westerly g-de and the time of her arrival is indefinite. The Federal Line steamer Pipinki was due at Auckland from New York yesterday afternoon. A further wireless message, however, yesterday morning stated that she was 190 miles from Auckland and. was making slow progress against a hard south-west gale. Her arrival is expected this morning. An early improvement in the weather is indicated bv the barometer, which had fallen to 29.35 in. on Thursday morning. It has been steadily rising since and last night tho reading was 29.90 in.
