WHALING IN ANTARCTIC.
EXTENSION OF OPERATIONS. ADDITIONS TO THE FLEET. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J WELLINGTON, Monday. , A considerable extension of whaling operations in the Antarctic by Norwegian companies is foreshadowed for next season. Operations in the Ross Sea are at present carried on by means of tha factory ships (J. A. Larsen and Sir James Clark Ross, which make an annual voyage accompanied by 10 6hasers. Three well-known liners, two of which have been regular traders to New Zealand for more than 20 years, have been purchased for conversion into factory ships. These are the Athenic, Opawa and Medic. The Medic, which has been engaged in the Australian trade for 30 years, will rank in size next after the C. A. Larsen, which is the largest factory ship in the world. It is stated that the Athenic and Medic may be fitted up in the same manner as the C. A. Larsen. It is not known in which region of the Antarctic the new factory ships and their attendant whale chasers, which will number at least five to each big ship, will operate, but in all probability it will be in the vast nrea westward of the Ross Sea and south of Australia.
