OBITUARY.
GOVERNOR OF AGRA. SIR ALEXANDER MUDDIMAN. United Service. CALCUTTA, June 17. Sir Alexander Mudditnan, Governor of Agra and Oudh, died suddenly to-dav from heart failure. The Government thus loses one of its most able and tactful servants.
The late Sir Alexander Phillips Muddiman had been Governor of the United Provinces* of Agra and Oudh since 1927. He was homo member of the Executive Council of the Governor-General and Leader of the Assembly, March 1924-7. He was Under-Secretary to the Government of Bengal, 1903, registrar of the High Court at Fort William, 1905, additional member of the Legislative Council, 1915, secretary to the Government of India, Legislative Department, 1915-.il, officiatingj.law member, 1919, and President of the Council of State, India, 1920-4. Sir Alexander was born in February, 1875, and educated at Wimborno School, lie entered the Indian Civil Service in 1897 and served in Behar in various capacities. He was created knight in 1922.
VISCOUNT HAMBLEDEN. British Wireless. RUGBY, June 17. The death has occurred of Viscount Hambleden. His late father, Mr. W. H. Smith was for years leader of the House of Commons The late Viscount Hambleden, formerly Mr. William F. D. Smith, was the eldest son of the late Mr. W. H. Smith, M.P., and the first Viscountess Hambleden, whom he succeeded to the title in 191i>. He was educated at Eton and Oxford. He was formerly lieutenant-colonel in the Roval Ist Devon Yeomanry. He was Conservative M.P. for Strand, 1891-1910. Tn the Croat, War he served at Gallipoli and in Esvpt, 1915-16. His heir is his son, the Hon. William Henry Smith, born .Julv 25, 1903.
