ESCAPE FROM DEATH.
FERRY STEWARD'S PLIGHT. FALL BETWEEN BOAT AND WHARF [EY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A steward who jumped off the ferry steamer Maheno yesterday morning before the vessel was tied up at Lyttelton had a narrow escape from being jammed between the vessel and the wharf. He was rescued just in time. Stewards on the ferry boats are in the habit of jumping ashore before the vessel is tied up in order to obtain seats for passengers on the ferry train. Yesterday one of the stewards jumped ashore, but slipped and fell on his back. He was followed by another steward, who also slipped. The latter fell over the side of the wharf, but in falling managed to cling to a girder. He was hanging at full arm's length when some bystanders hauled him up on to the wharf. The man had a narrow escape from being crushed, for immediately upon his being hauled up the Maheno swung alongside and grazed the wharf in berthing.
