NEW ZEALAND'S LOYALTY.

appreciation at home. GOVERNOR-GENEIRAL'S SPEECH. An inspiring note of loyalty, with particular reference to New Zealand's love of King and Empire, was sounded by the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson. the Prime Minister, Mr. J. G. Coates, and Mr. J. B. Johnston, president, in speeches at a gathering of -over 700 members of the Auckland Orphans' Club on Saturday evening. Mentioning that it was the eve of the King's Birthday, His Excellency said here in New Zealand His Majesty's birthday struck a chord in their hearts. (Applause.) "I know the loyalty of New Zeal and ers, which you probably do not think out of the way, is deeply appreciated at Homo by one and all, and not the least by His Majesty himself," Sir Charles said. As the years rolled by new generations grew up, and there was never any harm in reiterating again and again that the British Empire represented to us here in New Zealand everything that was best in life. "To be partners in the Empire is one of the finest ideals we can have," added His Excellency. "We all have our work to do and no matter what' it is, even if it means only being a good citizen, if we do it in the right spirit, then we are helping to build up the Empire."

The Prime Minister said New Zealand people had. a great affection for Their Majesties. They greatly appreciated the fact that Their Majesties allowed members of the Royal Family to visit this distant part of the Empire, visits that strengthened the bonds of loyalty and affection. Althpugh we in New Zealand were only a few people, ho claimed there was no part of the overseas Dominions which had a closor affection for the Empire. (Applause.) Mr. Johnston referred to the many troubles that had beset the Empire, stating Great Britain had always emerged from the conflict clean and unsullied. New Zealanders were filled with a sense of loyalty to the Empire and loyalty to their King. (Applause.) On the eve of His Majesty's birthday they sang God Save the King, realising the full signiffcance of the words.
