NEW INFANT SCHOOL.

BUILDING AT MEADOWBANK. THE OPENING CEREMONY. The new infant department of the Meadowbank school, Eemuera, was officially opened by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large attendance of parents and children. The future headmaster of the infant branch, Mr. J. F. Roberts, was also welcomed. The new building, which lies on an extensive sito at the rear of the main school, is a wooden structure comprising three classrooms, and will accommodate 155 pupils. Along the full length of the building runs a 7ft. corridor, the classrooms opening from this passageway on the side facing the sun. AH the rooms are large and exceptionally airy, the north wall being almost entirely composed of large windows, all of which can bo opened. In each room a heating furnace has been provided, while the lighting system is up-to-date in every respect. At one end of thp building is a teachers' common room, and at the other a children's cloakroom.

Although the school has only just been completed the grounds are laid out with trees and shrubs, and a drive has been permanently provided. The site is on a gentle slope, lying, toward the sun all day and providing a fine panorama. In performing the opening ceremony, Mr. Burns congratulated the parents on the possession of a modern school of the latest design. The building had been obtained onlv through the persistency and continuous efforts of parents and the School Committee combined, and he hoped the parents would continue to take the same interest in the school, and would iogard it as their own. He urged parents to send their children to school regularly, as irregular attendance was. unsatisfactory to both teacher and child. Mr H. E. Jones, deputy-chairman of the School Committee in welcoming Mr. ■Roberts, said his character was well known and in obtaining bis services the school bad cause for congratulation. "He is the verv man we have been looking for." he snid. A welcome wns also ev'tendnfl bv Mr. T!. TTne, a member of the Education Board, to Mr. Roberts, who briefly responded.
