SOMBRE NOTES.

I SCENE ON THE LAWN. FASHIONS AT ELLERSLIE. The weather .on Saturday ms.de the first day of the winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club a very pleasant outing, but a wind that had all the tang of the Arctic regions called for furs and wraps of the warmest description. 'Of fur coats there seemed to be no lack, and some very handsome ones were to be seen as well as stoles and coats with heiavy fur collars and cuffs. Generally speaking it was the day of the tailored suit, and these, a shade longer than has been the rule of late, were very attractive looking in their smartness and suitability to the occassion. In colour, the dressing was dccidedlv sombre as seems to be the way in winter just at the time when warmth of colour seems almost a necessity. There was a great deal of black worn, and following it closely in popularity, navy blue, brown and a certain amount of the lighter shades of blue. Whore colour had its outlet it was usually with the tweed tailor-mades, with which wer« worn hats in all shades of red, blue, yellow and green Much attention seemed to have been paid to the accessories such as shoes handbags, and race-card covers, some particularly charming examples of handbags being seen. Mrs. Haviland, attended the races Her Excellency wore a black coat over a cream frock, with wide capelike sleeves trimmed with brown fur and a small black hat with cream-shaded band, finished witi» white ospreys.
