SPEAKER OF COMMONS.
RESIGNATION PREDICTED. POST HELD SINCE 192!. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received June 3, 5.55 p.m.) LONDON. June 2. Owing to the siate of his health, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr., J. H. Whitley, will retire from that position on June 19. It is expected that ha will resign his seat as a member a few days later.
Mr. J. H. Whitley has been Speaker of the House of Commons since 1921, and Liberal member for Halifax since 1900. He was born in Halifax on February 8, 1866. He was a Junior Lord o! the Treasury, 1907-10, depufay-chairman of Ways and Means, 1910, chairman 1911-21, and also Deputy-Speaker for the latter period.
