OUTLAWRY OF WAR PACT.

DOMINIONS FAVOURABLE. REPLIES TO V/ASH INIGTON. AUSTRALIA AND CANADA. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received June 3, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON. June 2. The reply of the Commonwealth Government to America's invitation to participate in a multilateral treaty for the outlawry of war. was received to-day by the United States Secretary of State, Mr. F. B Kellogg. It is understood to be favourable. The text will be published on Tuesday. In tho Canadian Government's reply to the invitation, also to hand,- it says it welcomes tho movement and commonds it for its directness and simplicity. The reply makes it clear that Canada sees in the contemplated treaty no interference with the covenant of the League of Nations or with tho obligations assumed under it. The Canadian Note recalls pointedly that the question of applying sanctions under the Leagua is for the member States themselves to f Jecide, if and when the occasion arises. The text of the Canadian Note is as follows: "The proposals of the United States Government by their directness and simplicity afford to the peoples of tho world » new and notable opportunity of ensuring lasting peace. My Government is prepared to recommend to the Dominion Parliament the acceptance of the proposed treaty. " Carelul consideration has been given to the point whether our obligations under the covenant of the League conflict in any way with the obligations entailed in the proposed pact. The Canadian Government regards the League, with all its limitations as indispensable and as a continuing agency of international understanding, and it would not desire to enter upon any course which might prejudice its effectiveness. However it is convinced that there is no conflict in letter or in spirit between the covenant and the proposed pact or between the obligations assumed under each."
