NOXIOUS WEEDS CONTROL.
THE SUPPLIES OF INSECTS, [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT, j WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Scientific and Industrial Research' Council met yesterday } when an outline of the work which lias been accomplished and which is in hand was submitted. With regard to noxious weeds research, the report stated that Mr. David Miller took up duty as director at the beginning of May. His report' was considered in detail at the last meeting of the Noxious Weeds Control Committee, held at Nelson on May 17. The committee has recommended that ail open permit be granted now for the liberation of tyria jacobaeae, and that increasing supplies of this insect be imported so that it may be extensively liberated in ragwort-infested areas next season. Plans for fuller co-operation with overseas research stations were carefully considered, and it is hoped that the proposals suggested, will ensure greater supplies of insects to enable the large percentage of losses at present involved in acclimatisation to be avoided. In view of the entomological problems being brought to the notice of the Noxious Weeds Committee consideration will have to be given to the matter of widening the scope of its present sphere of activities.
