THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. SECOND ROUND COMMENCED. TWO TEAMS IN THE LEAD. i There were not many spectators to witness the opening of the second round of the Auckland Hockey Association's competition * matches at Bemuera on Saturday. A fast, hard-fought contest between St. Luke's and Mount Eden resulted in a draw, there being no score to either side. North Shore defeated Areta by 3 goals to 1 in a ragged, patchy game. The University-Somerville fixture was postponed on account of the absence of the students in Wellington. In the senior B grade Otahuhu further advanced its lead in championship points by defeating Somerville by a goal to nil. This was the only game in the section. Play opened fast in the match between St. Luke's and Mount Eden and Mount Eden broke away from the bully-off. It did not hold the advantage long and St. Luke's returned along the right wing. From a centre by Hookham a hard shot was sent in. but it was cleverly fielded and dealt with by Vail. A long corner to St. Luke's was followed by hard play in the Mount Eden circle, but the defence proved sound. St. Luke's continued to make most, of the play, but their, movements lacked the necessary finish. Steele got in a hit from a penalty corner, but it was successfully smothered by the Mount Eden forwards. St. Luke's was benefiting by most of the free hits, which were numerous. Penalty corners gave St. Luke's several chances in the circle, which were not availed of. .At length Mount Eden lifted the siege and gave St Luke's a turn of defending, which continued until halftime. On resuming, Chaplin and Ash tcok play to St. Luke's circle and gained a penalty corner. Highfield saved a very (Hidden shot by Chaplin. Rapid exchanges followed for a time in midfield until the Mount Eden forwards came through to attack. A powerful drive by Robertson relieved the pressure. and a similar shot by Burnett turned a Mount Eden attack into defence. A shot swung in by T. Giles was effectively stopped by Vail. Thern was much excitement when Fletcher finished off a nice conceded movement by driving into the net. The score was disallowed, however, for offside play. Anthony, who stopped and shot in hard and true Dunn, on the left wing, made a clever run down the line and his centre hit allowed Taylor to get in a shot that evened the score. Both teams were playing a loose game, without combination._ Hughes was doing most effective defensive work for Areta. Dunn again beat three opponents neatly and carried the ball well _ down to centre nicely to the goal mouth. A penalty comer was not turned to advantage by Areta and North Shore broke away. f\ shot by Lucas struck the side of the net. North Shore was next called on to defend and Rankin saved in good style. Areta wcis unfortunate in missing a score, from a good effort just before the interval. On resuming, some players m each team showed a tendency to use their weight unnecessarily and play was very frequently stopped for breaches of the rules. Tho Areta halves were most successful in break ing up the attacks " the North Shore forwards Bet going. Rykers missed with a shot from a good position. A penalty corner to North Shore was successfully smothered. Eventually, the ball came along the "line of forwards to Reid, who made no mistake with an unobstructed shot from a good position. Areta rallied to attack and a shot went over the North Shore goal. P. Anthony just missed scoring aerain bv sunning as he was about to strike. Hughp" blocked another likely shot. Areta nandn another sortie, but once more was pulled up for infringements when in a promising position. James sent in from a narrow angle a shot which rebounded from th« post. Following in, he cot it again and added a third goal for North Shore. Thi« was the lrcst incident, of the game, which ended in a win for North Shore by 3 goals to 1. LOWER GRADE RESULTS. Taylor scored twice and Holland scored for Christchurcn. It was an even game, much spoilt by the mud. Winn, goalkeeper, saved brilliantly for Auckland many times.
