WINTER RACING.

ELLERSLIE MEETING OPENS. great northern hurdles. Victory for beau cavalier. QUEEN ARCH'S SURPRISE WIN. The Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting was inaugurated at EJlerslie on Saturday under pleasant weather conditions, and the attendance of 20,000 was up to the best previous record for the •winter gathering. The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fercusson arrived at, the course before the running of the second race. Their Excellencies were welcomed by the president of the club. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, who escorted them to the vice-regal box. Everything during the day passed off most pleasantly, and the arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, were in all respects up to the high standard in keeping with Ellerslie. Though the contest for the leading event of the programme was disappointing, the racing on the whole provided a capital day's sport. The field for the Great Northern Hurdle Race was reduced to 10, the late withdrawals including Archibald and Brigadier Bill. The prospects of Mister Gamp had been proclaimed in so tuneful a key that the chestnut gelding from Palmerston North was eagerly scanned when he came into the birdcage, and he made a good impression, for he was in excellent condition. Wedding March also carried a well-trained appearance, and his party were very hopeful of the bay gelding repeating his victory of the previous -rear. Beau Cavalier, who strutted round the enclosure in a very free manner, had n solid following despite the fact that his best efforts had been registered in crosscountry events. Aberfeldy lacked nothing on the score of condition, and the same remark could be applied to Maunga and Mia Bella. Prior to the opening of speculation it seemed to be a popular opinion that- Mister Gamp would ba made first favourite, but at the close of operations on the totalisator Wedding March was found in the post of honour. It does not require a great deal of space lo relate the history of the race, for Beau Cavalier was practically in front from the initial obstacle. Mister Gamp went up to the leader at the end of a mile and a-half, and he raced almost level with his Auckland rival to the eighth hurdle, where the latter had the best of it. Bejtu Cavalier then streaked away, and when Mister Gamp fell at the ninth hurdle it was left to Mia Bella to fight it out with Beau Cavalier. The Waikato mare raised the excitement coming to the last hurdle, but Beau Cavalier had matters all his own ■way in the run home. There was a warm round of applause for Beau Cavalier and his rider, S. Henderson, when they came hack to the enclosure, and the owner, Mr. A. G. Quartlev, had t-o respond to many warm congratulations on the success of his colours.

The surprise of the daV was connected ■with the Cornwall Handicap, in which a brace of outsiders in Queen Arch and King Emerald fought out the finish for tho leading position, victory resting with the former, who will be best remembered for the victory she registered in the Avondale Guineas of 1923.

The totalisator investments during the day amounted to £74,461 10s. Compared ■with the sum (£92.707 10s) handled on the corresponding day last, year this represents a decrease og £18,246. It has, however, to be stated that last year the meeting opened on the King's Birthday which was a public holiday.

THREE FAVOURITES WIN. BY ARCHER. For the first division of the .Tervois Handicap Respirator was ft slightly better favourite than Waltzer, with solid backing also for Bluespear. The favourite was well beaten and was one of the last to finish, the winner turning up in Auriculus, vwho was seventh choice at a nice price. Catapult was Quickest- to begin and along the back was joined by Appellant, Kildeer, Waltzer, Storm Fiend, Orchu3, Miss Myrtle and Auriculus being also prominent. Running through the cutting Catapult and Appellant were still together' in front, with Waltzer, Kildeer, Storm Fiend, Speechless, Auriculus and Bluespear (who was being hard ridden) following in close order. Nearing the turn Appellant was beaten, and the loaders into the straight were Catapult and Waltzer. who were followed by Auriculus. Storm Fiend, Elldeer and Appellant. Auriculus took charge at the distance and went, on to win handsomely by two and a-half lengths from Waltzer, who beat Te Waka by a neck. 3peechle?s wa3 fourth and then came Storm Fiend, Catapult, Kildeer, Miss Myrtle, Orchus and Bluespear. Auriculus was ridden by an apprentice. Fennel], whost first win it was. Respirator was beaten by the going and Bluespear disappointed. Te Waka finished on well and may soon do better. The Green Lane Steeplechase was a good betting race and there was solid support for Wee Marble, Mangani. San Fera and Kaineh am eh a, who were backed in that order. Eahudur led over the first fence, where Mangani fell. Then Bahadur went on to show tho way up tho hill to Clockwork, Wee Marble, Lord Bruce, Lady Cintra and Kamehameha. At the double Bahadur and Wee Marble were together in front, about six lengths out from Lady Cintra, Clockwork, Lord Bru~o yncl Kamehameha. Running along the back Lady Cintra went over at the fence by the six furlong post and Kamehameha moved up. There was little between Bahadur. Wee Marble and Kamehameha as they went up tho hill the second time and they were the only ones with a chance. Kamehameha had a "life ' at the first fence on the hill, but soon closed up again to take charge coming dov.-n the incline from Wee Marble and Bahadur. Though he ran the last, fence down Kamehameha wae n"t troubled at the finish to score by three lengths from Wee Marble, who heaf Bahadur by ten lengths. Clockwork was fourth and ten lengths away were San Fera. Sea Comet and Lord Bruce. Bahadur may improve with the race. San Fera was never a possibility. Miss New Zealand was a good favourite for the second division of the Jervois Handicap. with solid backing also for Restaurant and Marble King. Billikins and Marble King found their feet quickest to lead along the back from Wyoming, Brampton, Quinsilia, Oscar, Modest Boy and Miss New Zeatsnd. Running through the cutting Billikins and Marble King were out five lengths from Oscar, who was four lengths clear of Brampton, Miss New Zealand and Modest Boy. Rounding the bend Billikins and Marble King were still a few lengths clear but Oscar and Miss New Zealand were closing up, while Arikitoa. Modest Boy and Brampton were next. Miss New Zealand

caught the leaders at the distance and came away to beat Billikins by three lengths, Oscar being a neck awaj third. Arikitoa was fourth, succeeded by Restaurant (who carue from a long way back). Marble King. Modest Boy and Killute. Billikins and Marble King wore made a lot of use of and in the circumstances Billikins stayed on well. Oscar. Arikitoa and Modest Boy aro likely improvers. For the Penrose Hurdles Bourn was backed down to a short price, with Quinc.oma and Potoanui next in demand and the others at good prices. Prince Lu, Archeno and Marble Mount led over the first fence clear of Quincoma. Passing the stand Prince Lu and Marble Mount were together in front of Archeno, with a gap of eight lengths to Bright Day, Quincoir.a. Hangawera, Peneus, Star of the East, Llewellyn and Bourn, who were in close order. Hangawera, Peneus and Star of the East dropped back along the back, where Llewellyn and Bourn moved up. Quincoma fell at the fence by the sis furlong post and Archeno at the next, leaving Prince Lu to lead through the cutting from Marble Mount, Llewellyn and Bourn, with Kawini moving up, though some lengths back. Rounding the bend Prince Lu just led Marble Mount, Bourn and Llewellyn There was little between Prince Lu, Bourn and Llewellyn at the last fence. In a fine finish Bourn prevailed by a neck from Prince Lu, with Llewellyn two lengths away third. Kawini was running on in fourth position, with Marble Mount fifth, and theu a cap of seven lengths to Star of the East. Kilburn, Potoanui and Scot Free. Pekatahi was" nearly down at the second fence and was afterwards pulled up. His rider made a remarkable recovery. Prince Lu went a fine race for a novice and should soon win. Llewellyn and Kawini (who came from a very long way back) are likely to be back to winning form shortly. Quincoma was travelling particularly well when he fell and must, have been hard to beat. Ho came back slightly lame. Marble Mount also shaped well for a beginner. Beau Cavalier's Victory. The Great Northern Hurdles was a disappointing contest, as most of the runners never had a chance. Wedding March was favourite, but there was also .heavy backing for Mister Gamp and Beau Cavalier. The field raced almost in line to the first fence, where Aberfeldy fell. Beau Cavalier being first over. Beau Cavalier showed the way past the stand to Mister Gamp, Royal Form, Kararnu and Mia Bella. Along the back Beau Cavalier established a lead of eight lengths and passing the stand the second time ho led by six lengths from Mister Gamp, who was four lengths clear of Mia Bella, with a gap of eight lengths to Maunga, then coming Kararnu, Royal Form, Pouri and Wedding March. With seven furlongs to go Mister Gamp ran up to Beau Cavalier and they were ten lengths out from Mia Bella, who was well clear of Maunga, Karamu and Pouri. Kararnu fell at the fence by the sis furlong post and Pouri followed suit at the next. Beau Cavalier iumped away from Mister Gamp at the six furlong post and at the cutting leading the latter by five lengths, while Mia Bella was moving up and the others were beaten. Mister Gamp came down at the second to last fence, leaving Beau Cavalier to lead into the straight four lengths clear of Mia Bella. Beau Cavalier pecked at the last fence, but went on to win by two and a-half lengths from Mia Bella, who hung on very gamely. Maunga was seven lengths away third, with Wedding March nearly a furlong bock fourth and Royal Form the only other to finish. Vexatious fell at the second fence and was thus early out of the contest. Beau Cavalier'gave a dashing display and his jumping wna a factor in his success, as it enabled him to get away from Mister Gamp when that horse caught him along the back. Mister Gamp jumped faultily and it eventually meant his undoing. At the time he fell ho was close enough to have won. Mia Bella went a solid race and Maunga plodded all the way. None of the others ever had a chance.

Backers were far astray in the Cornwall Handicap, as two outsiders in Queen Arch and King Emerald filled the leadinß places. Mervette was favourite, but she only bad a slight call over Corinax and. To Kara. High Pitch got cut out at the start and before going a furlong slipped and fell. Nucleus and King Emerald were the leaders past the stand from Micrometer (who got cut back and was last before leaving the stright). Master Doon, Cynthia N., Papatu, Stormy (wide out) and Mervette. When the back was reached Nucleus and Stormy held command and they made play from King Emerald. Cynthia N.. Corinax. Papatu, Queen Arch and Mervette. who were in close order. Through the cutting Nucleus and Stormy were just leading Corinax, Cynthia N., Queen Arch, Mervette and King Emerald. Nucleus and Stormy were still in front at the turn, with Queen Arch, Mervette, Carinas, King Emerald and Cynthia N. all handy. Queen Arch caught, the leaders at the distance and went on to win by !three parts of a length from King Emerald, who defeated Mervette by three lengths. Corinax was fourth and then came Cynthia N. Nucleus, Schorr, Stormy ajid Lomint, Queen Arch revelled in the going, while King Emernld ran a surprising race. Mervette had every chance, but might do better at a mile. Corinax went a solid race. Stormy was not well handled and at a shorter distance should be very hard to beat. G-lendowie in Zona. Glendowie was backed down to a short price for the Hunt Club Htirdles and there was also strong support for Geyserland and Pukerimu. From a good start Pukerimu was quickest to the first fence and when they settled down he had Pai Ana, Odin, Louis Poto, Glendowio and Geyserland as his nearest attendants. Kunning round the bend Pukerimu was taken out very wide and at the stand he was joined by Glendowie and Odin, while Louis Poto, Gfeyserland and Pai Ana were next. Running into the back stretch Pompeius moved up fast to join Pukerimu and Glendowie in front of Odin, Geyserland and Importer, who was moving up fast. Glendowie, Pukerimu and Importer wcro racing abreast at the cutting clear of Geyserland, Odin a:ad Pompeius. Glendowie held a slight advantage a.t the last fence and went on to score decisively by two and a-hulf lengths from Pukerimu, who beat Importer by a similar margin. Geyaejland was running on in fourth position in front of Odin, Pompeius and Hotaan Abbey. Glendowio was a class above the others and won handsomely. Pukerimu was shockingly ridden, otherwise he would have seriously troubled the winner. His rider had him nil over the courso. Importer and Geyserland will improve, especially Geyserland, who should require a lot of beating in the Hunt Club Cup. There was a good pool on the Members' Handicap with Lorient 11., Sir Archie and King Lu the best backed. Flying Juliet and Dave were first to show out, while Tinokoa. was slightly loft. Day Guard soon ran to tho front and made play through the cutting from Kingfield. Nancy Lee, King Smock, Ballymoy 11., Flying Juliet and Tinokoa. who had run through quickly. Day Guard was first round tho bend, closely attended by Kingfield, Ballymoy 11., Nancy Leo, Tinokoa and King Smock. Once they straightened up Kingfield and Tinokoa challenged, Kingfield eventually winning by a length and a-lialf from the fast-finishing Oration. Day Guard was half a head away third and Nancy Lee fourth. Then followed King Lu. Tinokoa. King Smock and Ballymoy 11. Lorient 11. had his dunce settled at the start by getting out out and Sir Archie never got out oi the ruck until it was too late. Tinokoa. showed u, lot. of brilliance to be aecond at the distance, after being badly away. King Lu was finishing on and his turn should not be far away. Oration carne from a long way back. SUCCESSFUL HORSEMAN. S. HENDERSON'S FINE RECORD Twelve months ago S. Henderson earned a largo cheque by riding sia: winners and having a number of other mounts at tho Auckland Winter Meeting. The popular noraeman is again well in the limelight this yoar. as he was successful on Glei.dowie, Beau Cavalier and Kamehameha on Saturday. Had Quincoma not fallen there is a possibility that Henderson might_ have ridden the winner of tho four jumping events on the first day, as that horse was go,tig very well when lie fell. It will be a big thing to do. but there is a chanco Henderson may eclipse his fine achievement of last year at this meeting, as he has some good mounts on the last two dnyii.
