LIGHTER IN BREAKERS.
EXCITEMENT AT GISBORNE, BREAKAGE OF TOWLINE. CREW RESCUED BY ROPE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBOENE, Friday.. Excitement was caused on Waikanae Beach this eveuing when a lighter with a crew of eight men on board got into danger. It was being towed in after loading cargo into the liner Matakana, when the towline failed and, in spite of the efforts of tugs to rig another line, the lighter quickly drifted into the breakers. The evening was very stormy and there was a very heavy sea running. Seeing that the position appeared serious, two members of the Harbour Board staff, Messrs. R. Morse and R. Patty, and Mr. R. Mortimer went into the breakers and, after numerous attempts, got a line on board the lighter. By this means the crew were eventually brought ashore.
