COLD RAILWAY TRAVEL.
COMPLAINT BY PASSENGERS. STEAM-HEATING FACILITIES. A number of complaints regarding inadequate heating of carriages have been made recently by travellers on the night expresses from Wellington. It is stated that on the higher levels of the line in the southern King Country considerable discomfort is felt by travellers in the nonsleeping portions of the train, and travellers who have endured a wait on the station platform at National Park and Ohakune are unable to warm themselves when they join the train. Questioned regarding the apparatus on express trains, railway officials state the steam-heaters on the night expresses have been in use for more than a month past. All the carriages on the trains are warmed in the same manner, but it is pointed out that passengers often cut off the steam in their carriages themselves, while guards sometimes receive instructions from travellers to turn off the heaters for lengthy periods. The heaters are always available, and it rests with passengers whether they are in use.
