WINTER RACING.

SHE AUCKLAND MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES. NOTABLE CONTEST PROMISED. 'Another Great Northern Meeting will "be inaugurated at Ellerslie to-day, and the flags will again be found flying on the metropolitan course on the succeeding Monday and Wednesday in connection jvitb the winter fixture. Year by year *' Great Northern week " at Ellerslie has increased in popularity, with the result that the winter gathering is now looked forward to with an interest quite its own. Jt. would not, perhaps, be quite safe to offer the prediction that the approaching gathering will eclipse the best of its predecessors held at. Ellerslie at this season of the year, but it may be said with a great deal of confidence that three days' excellent sport will bo quite assured in the event of fine weather. The leading event of to-day's programme is the Great Northern -Hurdle Jiace, in which twelve horses are engaged. Jhe issue is on all hands voted very open; and the shape matters will assume' as between Wedding March, Archibald, 3lister Gamp and Beau Cavalier when Speculators come to operate on the iotalisator is a point of much interest, for each of the horses named are at present looked upon as equal favourites. In last, year's race, it may bo remarked, Wedding March (10.3) won by three {lengths from Archibald (10.7). In io-day's race Wedding March is weighted «t 11.8 and Archibald at 10.12, so that latter will meet his Waikato rival on 391b. better terms. Mister Gamp is popularly selected as the one likely to start 3,'avourite. The Cornwall Handicap, which is the ■principal flat race of the day, has a field of nineteen engaged, with a fine performer in the shape of Te Kara at the head of the list ; and he may be expected to play a part in the settlement of the question; and another horse hailing from the Waikato who will take his place in the field is Papatu. The following is a list of the horses engaged in the various events:—

SECOND DAY. Great northern steeplechase. The big cross-country event which is fat down for decision on Monday lias fifteen horses engaged; and a contest in every way worthy of the occasion appears to be assured. Beau Cavalier, Wedding March, ,Mnunga, Brigadier Bill, Tuki and Wiltshire represent the well-tested division. The dashing performance for which Beau Cavalier was responsible in last year's race marks him out for Special place; and though with 12.2 he has a very different task in regard to poundage to that of twelve months back liis proficiency as a jumper stands for a very great deal; and ha will probably fccunt sufficient admirers to send him out favourite.. The Great Northern Steeplechase field is composed as follows:-^
