Miss V. Ross, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland- • Miss D. N. Allan has returned to New Plymouth from Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Gale, of Wellington, are visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. P. Wakefield, of Wellington, are visiting Auckland. Mrs. S. Porritt has returned to Stratford from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. R. Main-Hathaway, of Remuera, is at present visiting Palmerston North. Mr. and Mrs. T. Baxter are visitors from Wellington and are staying at Cargen. Mrs. W. Dalziell, of Masterton, who has been spending several weeks at Rotorua, is visiting Auckland. Miss Ina Thomson, of Napier, who has been the guest of Mrs. ,1. P. Stuart, Mount Eden, for some weeks, has returned home. There was a large gathering of members of the Devonport Bowling Green Croquet Club on Monday afternoon at the bowlers' pavilion at Devonport, when progressive flag euchre was played. The president, Mrs. T. Kew-Harty, recoived the guests. The prize-winners were as follows:—Mrs. F. E. Mason, Mrs. F. Burgess, Mrs.' W. Gates and Mrs. A. Bartley. Afternoon toa was served by members of the club and the tables were decorated with salvias and' greenery. The proceeds were in aid of tho club fund. Art outstanding figure in the business world of the East is Miss Helen Wells, of Smyrna (states an exchange). Her grandfather, fifty years ago, resigned a position under the Turkish Government to begin trading at Smyrna. At hia death his son took over tho successful business which eventuated, and on the latter's death, about 35 years ago. his daughter assumed direction of affairs, though she had not long left a Swiss boarding-school. To-day she is the head of a concern with groat warehouses and offices in Smyrna and branches throughout the "Near East." ; • ; For tho first time in history when Parliament has been in session, a husband and wife marched down the floor of the Housp of Commons on the occasion when Miv Waiter R.unciman acted as one of th® sponsors for his wifo when she took her seat as M.P. for St. I%'es, states an English exchange. An incident that seems to have caused their fellow-members a great deal of amusement was tho fact that they were out of step. It is quite probable that this was Mr. Runciman's fault, as he appeared to find the ordeal very much more trying than did his wife. Mrs. Runciman stood smiling at the bar waiting for the Speaker to. call her, and chatted with her sponsor, Major-General Sir Robert Hutchison, the Liberal Whip, and many M.P.'s, who were offering her their congratulations. Mr. Runciman sat in tho darkest corner of the Liberal benches until it was time to come forward.
