PUBLIC MOTOR TRAVEL.
insurance of passengers.
REQUEST MADE TO MR. COATES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J MORRINSVILLE, Tuesday..
A point of interest to travellers in motor vehicles was brought before the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, by Mr. E. McGregor, president of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce. He asked for the introduction of legislation compelling the owners of motor vehicles to compulsorily insure passengers. Such legislation would be in the interests of travellers, who were not covered by any policy.
Thd Prime Minister said there was a possibility that the very people the proposed legislation aimed to help would bs penalised and it would rebound on the country people. Public safety had to be considered, but the fact should not be lost sight of that a heavy burden would be placed on somebody's shoulders. The question of third party risks was at present before thd Attorney-General, but this was a different aspect altogether. It should be remembered that additional charges made on owners would be passed on and a careful policy would have to be pursued. He was glad the matter had been brought up, and he would discuss it with the authorities.
