PUKEKOHE BOROUGH.

LOAN FOR WATERWORKS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, j PUKEKOHE, Tuesday. The Pukekohe Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. John Routly, presiding. The Local Bodies Loans Board advised that it would approve of a term of 36£ years, allowing a 1 per cent, sinking fund, for the proposed waterworks extension loan, ori s condition that cast-iron pipes were used. It was explained that a sum of over £BOOO, of which £SOOO would be expended forthwith, was required. The question of taking a poll on the proposal was deferred till next meeting. The Mayor was appointed the council's representative to the conference being convened by the One lreo Hill Road Board to discuss hospital finance. Advice was received from Mr. E. D. McLennan, M.P. for Franklin, that a Government subsidy of £675 toward the cost of purchasing Iloose's Bush Reserve would be made available, on condition that the council vested 10 acres of tlio reserve in the Crown. It "was resolved to reply that the council could not see its way clear to do thi:3, but would be pleased to receive the subsidy without such a condition. The Highwavs Board advised that the roads in the borough declared main highways would qualify for subsidies from the board as from April 2. The reported that estimates had been submitted to the board for reconstruction and bitumen-surfacing in Paerata Road and East Street, and for further bitumensurfacing at Reidy's Corner. It was decided to inquire of the Government if anv assistance would be available for the relief of unemployment in Pukekohe and vicinity. A recent return obtained by the council showed 36 personfi unemployed in the neighbourhood. Instructions were given for the estimates for the current financial year to be prepared. The Mayor said he was hoping that it would prove possible to reduce, the rates by one-eighth of a penny this year.
