NEW NATIONAL ANTHEM.
SOUTH AFRICAN PROPOSAL. [from our own correspondent.] CAPETOWN. March 21. Having agreed upon a national flag, South Africa is now considering the adoption of a national anthem. Dr. N. van dor Merwe, M.L.A., has raised the question and he suggests that May 31,. the date of the official hoisting of the national flag, would be a suitable occasion for introducing the national anthem. There are suitable tunes, written and composed by South Africans, already in existence, Mr. Van der Merwe points out, and he has in mind one that he regards as being particularly suitable. "Die Stem van Zuid Afrika" ("The Voico of Souih Africa"), the words of which are Senator Langenhoven, and the music by M. L. de Villiers. Among the members of Parliament there is a general feeling in favour of South Africa having its own national anthem. It is eniphasised, however, that the proposal would have to be very delicately handled in order to avoid any stirring up of feeling which would possibly mar the unanimity of the proceedings attending the ceremonial hoisting of the new flag.
