ESCAPED PRISONERS.
NO TRACE DISCOVERED. CLOTHES PROBABLY "PLANTED." No trace was found during the weekend of the two prisoners, John Buckley and Frank Bailer, who escaped from Mount Eden prison on Friday evening. The escape bears the mark' of careful preparation, and since no theft was reported on Friday night it is possible that clothes were "planted" for the fugitives. Before reaching the walled enclosure the prisoners endeavoured to delay pursuit, by tampering with the lock of a griddoor, which they shut behind them. Mount Eden gaol is rather favourably situated for an escape from the crowded part of the city. Once outside the walls the fugitive need not risk detection on the street, as the railway line can be followed toward the Domain and a goods train boarded easily on the approach to the Newmarket tunnel. Bailer escaped from Mount Eden prison several years ago and was recaptured at Whakatane. Before leaving Auckland" he broke into a shack and left his finger-prints.
