FOOD PRESERVATIVES.
PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY, May 18. A man was fined £lO the other day for selling mincemeat containing 18 grains of sulphur dioxide to the lb., instead of the grains allowed by law. The magistrate took a most serious view, and, incidentally, issued a warning to the public against food preservatives in general. The community, he said, would certainly go on suffering all the ills under the sun as long as it continued to tolerate the use of preservatives in food. He firmly agreed with the recommendation of a special commission which had investigated the matter in England, and had reported that preservatives should not be allowed in any food at all.
