The Somerville-Mount Eden match on the No. 1 ground opened with a rapid exchange of drives. Somerville attacked and Mount Eden yielded a corner, from which, however, it quickly cleared. A brief invasion by Mount Eden ended in the ball being driven over the goal line. Mount Eden was called on to defend and Vail twice cleared well. Kelly carried the ball down to the Somerville circle, but lost possession at the critical moment. Most of the play was taking place in midfield, with Somerville having slightly the better of it. Mainland, at fullback, ?.*as doing a great deal of effective defensive work for Mount Eden. Clive Watts shot in a hard drive from the circle, but it went past. Anderson missed badly in face of a Somerville rush and C. Watts registered the first goal of the match. From a corner hit against Mouni Eden E. Watts stopped nicely to allow hit brother Clive to add a second goal. The second speli commenced in cold driving rain. Somerville. with the storn: at its backs, took up the attack, but Mouni Eden successfully broke away from a corner It advanced to the Somerville circle, bul could not hold the advantage. Seccombe had a clear shot, but Vail stopped cleanly, and saved at the expense of a corner. A dangerous combined movement by the Somerville forwards was broken up by Mainland. The Watts brothers and Seccombe broke through the Mount Eden defence, but Vail again effected a most creditable save in the face of a strong combination. The forwards kept coming back and Eric Watts got one through to the net. Mount Eden was by no means done with, and several times made its way to the Somerville circle, only io meet with a very solid defence. At length a corner to Mount Eden provided a chance to Chaplin, who shot safely into the net. An unobstructed shot by H. Watts was again dealt with by Vail and Mount Eden returned with great vigour to the attack. From close play in the circle Fletcher shot another goal. The whistle went almost immediately, leaving Somerville victors by 3 goals to 2. i NORTH SHORE V. ST. LUKE'S. St. Luke's attacked immediately, but found a difficult obstacle in Frater. The St. Luke's forwards gained ground with effective passing, bit Reid and Rykers helped to take play oack toward St. Luke's territory. Rykers worked into a scoring position, but missed with his shot. St. Luke's had tc give a corner and from this Lucas found the net. Reid, P. Anthony and Rykerß were working well together, and largely through their efforts St. Luke's found itself again defending. From a penalty corner Anthony added a second goal for North Shore. St Luke's rallied and, gaining the circle, J. Gilep mit in a smart shot. Each side attacked in turn and Steele shot over the bar just before half-time. Hookham led a St. Luke's attack and_ a shot by Kelly was disallowed for an in fringement. North Shore's backs were show ing sound defensive tactics and several long hits removed the pressure. _ hut St. Luke's fullback, Burnett, and Williams were a serious bar to further progress.
