NEEDS OF FARMERS.

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE. MANY REMITS ADOPTED. [BY TELEGB.APH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCARGILL, Sunday. At the annual provincial conference of the Southland branch of the Farmers' Union, remits were adopted as follows: Urging adherence to the present system of land tax, and a fairer distribution of the petrol tax; demanding that the Summer Time Act be not placed on the Statute Book; condemning the flat tax on motor vehicles, and supporting an amendment to tho Motor Vehicles Act so that farmers carting their own produce would be exempted from having to pay heavy traffic licences. Other remits were adopted requesting the Government to remove the duty of £1 on cement; urging the Government to pass legislation to control the rate of interest at a figure which would bring the individual borrower into line in an equality of service to the State; protesting against the price of superphosphate in the South Island; and urging the Meat Board to take the necessary steps to have all lamb and mutton leaving New Zealand carry one brand. Remits were carried to the effect that the Arbitration Court Act is arbitrary in its application and unjust in principle, and that in the interest of farmers generally it should bo amended; recommending that no teacher be appointed in charge of a school without having served at least a year under a thoroughly qualified head teacher; suggesting that the Government be asked to remove protective duties from all industries that have been established 10 years; and affirming the principle of the Legislature working for free trado within the Empire.
