POSED AS A DOCTOR.
YOUNG MAN OBTAINS DRUGS.
THEFT FROM A CHURCH. Confessing he was a drug addict, Bernard Lux, a young man, appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with obtaining a drug on five separate occasions by posing as a doctor. Pleas of guilty were entered on all counts, and a further charge of stealing a money-box containing £4 was also admitted. Accused had stolen the offerings from a church box. In describing the case as an unfortunate one, Mr. Conlan, for accused, said Lux had been under six operations, and so much had he suffered that he had taken to drugs. Counsel asked that accused should be sent to Roto Roa Island.
"This poor young man has been under reformative treatment for two years," said Chief-Detective Hammond. "He got the drug by posing to medical supply people as a doctor. The theft charge is in a different category. He went to a church and stole the box in which were offerings." To allow application to be made to have Lux admitted to the island, the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, remanded him to appear next Monday.
