ROAD TO MURIWAI.

Sir, —In the columns of the Herald of Monday, May 14, appeared a paragraph under the heading of "The Roa'a to Muriwai," containing a report of the meeting with the Prime Minister of a deputation purporting to have been from the settlers of the Waitakere district. The deputation contained no representatives of the Waitakere district and, furthermore, the ratepayers and residents of Waitakere were not informed of the intentions of the deputation or even that it was intended to wait upon Mr. Coates. The route advocated by the Waitakere settlers leaves the main road at Waitakere station, via Wairere Road as far as Horsman Bros*, farm, thence through the property bequeathed by the late Mr. David Goldie to the citizens of Auckland and through the Government property of the Motutara Estate. This route had much to commend it. being the most direct route obtainable to Muriwai Beach and through some of the most beautiful bush and scenery in the Auckland district. The views of the surrounding country and ocean are unparalleled and there are abundant supplies of first-class metal at various points along the way with which to surface the road. The Government property and settlers on the western side of the Makaroa stream would be brought 10 miles nearer the city and would come within the suburban railway limits. This fact should command the financial support of the Government, and, as the unformed portion of the road is a matter of less than three miles, with the aid of the City Council and the A.A. A. (as suggested by Mr. M. J. Blanchfield in his letter of the 12th) the project should not prove costly to any one body, as compared" to the huge benefits that would accrue. • Allow me to join with Mr. Blanchfield in the suggestion that all join in the chorus, "We'll take the short road." E. R. JONKERS, Hon. Sec Waitakere Ratepayers and Residents* Association.
