POLICE COURT NEWS.
THEFT IN A HOTEL. TWO MEN SENT TO PRISON. Convicted on a charge of stealing £2 and a pocket book, David Morgan Leckie, aged 43., and John Reid, aged 28, were sentenced in the Police Court on Saturday to three months' and one month's imprisonment respectively. A cook, Thomas Miller, said he was approached in a hotel by accused. After they had had some drinks, Reid put his li£.nd in witness' pocket, taking out £2. Witness accused him of the theft, but Reid denied taking the money. At the pclico station, the money was found on Leckie.
Reid, it was stated, was a first offender, but Leckie had previous convictions.
Charges of being drunk at the Avondale railway station and of assaulting David White were preferred against William Lancelot Parr, aged 26. It was stated accused had been disorderly while travelling in a train from Hclensville. He was .remonstrated with by the guard and when the train stopped at I lie station, accused struck fiie guard and kt.ocked him off the train. lie also wj.nted to fight the signalman. A total fine of £2 JOs was imposed. For assaulting Stephen Thomas, n fine of £1 was imposed on Stanley Wilson, aged 50. Alexander Fra?;er, aged 71. was fined 105 on a chargo of being drunk in a tramcar. "This is accused's 102 nd conviction," said Senior-Sergeant Cummings. when Eciward Knox, aged 52, was fined £3, in default 14 days' imprisonment. for drunkenness A charge of stealing 13s, (lie properly of a citv firm, was preferred against Leslie Gordon Rilev. Chief-Detective Hammond said the offence had been admitted, but as there was a suggestion of other thefts, further inquiries would l>o necessary. Accused was remanded until Tuesday.
