In order that the magistrate might rule whether the booklet was a programme or a guide, a plea of not guilty was entered in the Police Court yesterday on behalf of John S. Adeane, who was charged with having published the New Zealand Trotting Guide, purporting to he a guide of the trotting events at the Otahuhu Trotting Club's meeting in February. Publication was admitted. Evidence was called to show that no permission had been given to Adeane to publish the booklet. It was stated that when sold on the streets it affected the Bale of the official race-books and resulted in the public becoming confused. " No more is published in the booklet than is printed in the newspapers; in fact, there is not so much," said Mr. Graham for Adeane. Chief-Detective Hammond: It does not matter what the newspapers say or what they print. They print the list of acceptances and the like with the knowledge and consent of the clubs. This man has published an unofficial card which is Bold on the streets. The chief detective added that tips given 5n the booklet were bad, as only one or two horses won. The magistrate, Mr. W. R.
