LEYS INSTITUTE READERS. f SUCCESSFUL YEAR'S WORK. I Figures showing that the taste of the reading public is still largely for works of fiction, were contained in the report of the committee of management presented at the annual meeting of the Leys Institute last evening. The president, Mr. W. Cecil Leys, who presided, said the attendance was the largest for many years.

The report stated the total number of borrowers on the library roll at March 31 was 780, compared with 764 the previous year. The supply of new books at the lending library, for circulation among borrowers, was well maintained, a total of 1079 volumes being added during the year. There was now a choice of 13,236 books in addition to magazines in the department. The year's issue totalled 74,713 volumes, a daily average of 247, and an increase of 6419 volumes over last year. The character of books issued for homo reading was as follows: —Fiction, 52,153; general works, 16,037; juvenile works, 2881; biography, 896; travel, 961; useful arts, 287; fine arts, 221; literature, 284; sociology, 291; philosophy, 102; history, 417; religion, 75; languages, 12; science, 96. There was now a stock of 15,901 volumes in -'the reference department. A total of 641 books was donated during the year, 534 being presented by Mr. Cecil Leys. The statement of accounts showed a credit balance of £2O at March 31, the total receipts for the year amounting to £1373 12s. A subsidy of £750 had been received from the trustees of the late Mr. W. Leys, subscription's realising £261, and fees for reading hooks, The expenditure upon books and periodicals was £233. "You will see we still have a tremendous preponderance of books of fiction goinp cut of the lending library," the president said, referring to the year's operations. "There is an undue proportion compared with general literature taken out."
