OVERSTAYED PERMIT.
ANOTHER CHINESE FINED. Stating he was tired of hearing the same excuse made for Chinese, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, fined Wong Sam, aged 35, £lO on a charge of overstaying his temporary permit to remain in New Zealand. A deportation order was also made. In asking for leniency, Mr. Tong, for accused, said Wong Sam had been endeavouring to get away. Money was the trouble. It was the desire of Wong Sam to go back to China and not to Suva, as other of his countrymen had done.
The Magistrate: I have heard the excuse of sending to China for money too often.
Mr. Penn, Collector of Customs: Wong Sam has overstayed his permit by 19 months. If ho goes to China we will certainly not see him again. But the faro to China is four or five times greater than tho fare to Suva.
