POLICE COURT NEWS.
IDLE AND DISORDERLY. MAN WHO LOST HIS CLOTHES. A plea of guilty to a charge of being fdle and disorderly, in that he begged alms in Wellesley Street on Friday, was admitted by Alexander Mellis, aged 65, in the Police Court on Saturday. Sentence of one month's imprisonment was passed.
"This man has been sleeping out, and ■while he was washing some of his clothes on the waterfront his trousers and shirt were carried away on the tide and he was left shivering in ;;he cold," said Sub-In-spector McCarthy, when William Stirling, aged 59, was charged with being Idle and disorderly, in that he had no means of support. It was decided the best place for accused was the Salvation Army Home, and Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., adjourned tho case in order that Stirling might be cared for by the Army authorities for a time.
Charged with drunkenness in Queen Street, Jame3 Cope, aged 30, was fined 30s, and on a further charge of using obscene language, he was fined £3. Theft of £4 waft admitted by Eric John Stephen, aged 37. "Accused stole the money from the pocket of a workman," «aid Chief-Detective Hammond. Stephen was remanded to appear for sentence next Saturday.
