MOTORISTS' LICENCES.

RESTRICTION OF ISSUE.

The suggestion that the present haphazard method of issuing motor-driv-ing licences to applicants from any district was to blame for any relaxation in the tests for competency was made at the meeting of tlie Waitemata County Council yesterday. A member said a local body which had a reputation for leniency would attract applicants from other districts. It was desirable that licensing authorities should be compelled to restrict the issue of licences to motorists who kept their cars within the district over which the body had control. This would also facilitate the detection of the evasive driver whose failure to make application within his own area could be promptly checked. Notice of motion to bring these points under notice of the Government was given.
