ATTEMPT TO STEAL LUGGAGE. ARREST OF YOUNG MAN. A visitor from Invercargill, Henry Owen Wixon, aged 22, was charged in the Police Court yesterday with attempting to steal £lB worth of luggage left by another person at the railway station. Accused pleaded guilty. According to Chief-Detective Hammond, Wixon had said he met a man who had found a luggage ticket and they had intended to obtain the luggage, sell it, and divide the proceeds. To enable the police to communicate with Invercargill, the magistrate, Mr. W. 1.1. McKean, convicted Wixon, but postponed sentence until Friday,
Sentence of two months' imprisonment was passed on Eric Malcolm Biel, aged 33, who pleaded guilty to a charge of converting to his use a motor-car belonging to William A. Shirley, on lebruary 29. On a further charge of stealing a tin of spirit, accused was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three months.
A week's remand to appear in Asliburton was granted in the case of John William McClurc, aged 49, who was charged with breaking and entering the counting-house of David Friedlander, in May, 1919, and stea'ing £49. He was also charged with stealing a pair of socks from the Ashburton Boys' High School. The theft of £3O belonging to a woman was admitted by a married seaman, aged 23, who was remanded to appear to-day, so that the probation officer could report to the magistrate. In the meantime his name was suppressed. Homeless, penniless and unemployed. Georgo Ross, aged 54, carpenter, pleaded not guilty to being idle and disorderly, although he admitted he had no means of support. He was sentenced to threo months' imprisonment. For drunkenness Edward Hall, aged 50, was fined 30s, while for a breach of his prohibition order ho was fined £5.
