THE BIRDS' BATTLE.

I am enclosing a nature story, which is as follows: —One day, as I wan walking in the bush, I heard a peculiar noise which came from above me. On looking up I saw a kingfisher investigating a tui's nest. In another moment out darted the tui, ready for a fight. Now the two birds were engaged in a fierce encounter. When they had finished

tho struggle the tui was victorious. They then flew to opposite trees and sat calling each other names. Then a second later tho tui and the kinffisher flew toward each other and had another encounter. When about half way through the kingfisher retired and the tui returned to hia nest. —Margaret Wright, Manu:an*«
