ERADICATION OF WEEDS.
QUESTION OF ABATTOIRS.

, The Hauraki Plains County Council met to-day, the chairman, Mr. E. L. Walton, presiding. The Northern Steamship Company reported that a serious accident, due to the dangerous stale of the wharf at Fisher's Eanding, had recently been averted by the narrowest of margins. In view of the use by the council of the wharf the company suggested that the council authorise the necessary repair work. The engineer, iir. F. Baa ham, said repairs were . in hand. It was decided to instruct the engineer to report, on the damage. The inspector of stock, Mr. H. R. Denize, indicated his willingness to co-oper-ate with the council in the eradication of noxious'weeds. Mr. Madgwick said it was desired tht .greater efiort should be made by the authorities in the suppression ol noxious weeds. Mr. T. McLennon, district electrical engineer for the Public Works Department, forwarded an assurance that everything practicable was being done to prevent interruptions in the electric-powei' service to farmers as a result of the operations at Arapuni. The Puriri Ratepayers' Asso ation suggested that the council combine with the association in the provision of a water service to the Huirau and Turua districts. Mr. Madgwick said members of the council would be invited to discuss the question at a meeting of ratepayers. , A letter from the Ngatea Farmers Veterinary Club requested the council to again consider the question of erecting abattoirs on the Hauraki Plains. If this was impracticable, the club suggested that the council should insist on the slaughtering of Plains cattle at the Thames abattoirs. Sir. Harris said he regarded the proposal as premature. He moved that the club be informed that, the council, * * though sympathetic, was not in a position at present to erect abattoirs. The motion was carried. . , . The Department of Interna 1 . Affairs' intimated that a month would be allowed as from February 23. for the receipt 01 objections to the constitution of a H® u " raki West Drainage District. It was unanimously decided that no objection raised.
