DRAINING SWAMP AREAS.
NGAROTO BOARD'S DISTRICT. REQUEST BY RATEPAYERS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TE AWAMUTU. Thursday. Ratepayers cf tho Is'garoto Drainage Board, which operates over swamp country between Ohaupo, Paterangi and Te Awaiuutu, decided at a meeting to ask the board to obtain an engineering estimate of the cost of maintaining all lateral drains connecting with the three main drains, and if the estimated cost.is favourable to form special rating areas aud raise a loan. A proposal that the cost should lie borne by tho whole of the ratepayers was rejected. The board has deepened drains, thus considerably lowering Ihe level of Lake Ngaroto and smaller lakes adjacent, making available for farming hundred? of acres of land, formerly under water or waterlogged.
