THE AUCKLAND COUNCIL.

PROPOSED NEW BUSH RESERVE

A meeting of the—Auckland District Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture this week was presided over by the' chairman, Mr. T. L. Lancaster.

Several matters of interest were contained in the minutes of the meeting of the Dominion Council. Tho printing of tho regulations in connection with the Horticulture Education Act had been left to the secretary. Fourteen diplomas had been awarded to experienced horticulturists. Twelve applications had been held over for further inquiry, while two had been declined on account of age. Regarding, tho registration of plants the High Commissioner advised he was making investigations and receiving information from other countries. Suggestions made in connection with the national botanic gardens proposal had been circulated among curators of public gardens in New Zealand. The register of all judges of horticulture was undergoing preparation. It was reported the Dominion secretary had set up committees to deal with the expenditure of the grant of £IOO to the institute. It was decided to spend the money in citrus selection and research work. \ Mr. A. J. Brown reported he had attended - a,' meeting of the Great South Road Beautifying Society. It was resolved fo forward a letter expressing appreciation of the aims of the society and promising assistance and advice from the institute's experts. A committee was appointed to deal with the question of public lectures to be held 11 ex/, season. An offer of a . valuable area of native bush for a reserve at Kauri Bu*h, near Waimauku, was received. Members considered that as the ground was handy to the railway it should be reserved. The matter was referred fo a committee to report to a special meeting.
