DOMINION BANDSMEN.

HIGH STANDARD PRAISED. PERFORMANCES AT CONTEST. [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. That the Dominion's champion band, Queen Alexandra's Own, Wanganui, could give points to any band in Australia, and that it would almost certainly win at any contest if it reproduced the form it has shown at the present contest, is the opinion of Mr. E. Jackson, of Brisbane, who has just finished a strenuous week's judging at the band contest just concluded. , Mr. Jackson was a former resident of Oamaru, but has for many years been resident in Australia, where he is considered to be tho foremost authority on matters pertaining to bands and band music. He is the conductor of the Brisbane Municipal Band, and also holds an appointment akin to that of a municipal director of music. Mr. Jackson is enthusiastic regarding the standard of playing by the A grade bands, which ho has heard at tho contest, and said .they were, for the most part, quite up to the Australian standard. The B grade bands, however, were not so good as the B grade bands in the Commonwealth. The solo playing at the contest had been of a very high standard, and the cornet championship class had provided players who could lrold their own in any Australian contest. The winner of the champion-of-chainpions class, Mr. W. P. Coughlan, of (he Kaikorai Band,. was one of the most wonderful players he had over heard.
