COUNTY CHAMBERS SCHEME.

COUNCIL'S LATEST DECISION

[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CORQMANDEL, Friday.

The Coromandel County Council met this week, the chairman, Mr. S. James, presiding. Arising from a mishap to a wharf at Whitianga on January 18 it was resolved that the Northern Steamship Company be informed that the. council will hold it responsible for the loss and damage resulting from the steamer Ngatiawa colliding with the wharf. Mr. Lee was authorised to attend to the dismantling and recovery of the damaged portion of the wharf and the Marine Department is to be notified of the position of tho broken piles left standing.

Several tenders were received for the erection of the proposed council chambers, but on the motion of Mr. Simpson it was resolved by a majority of one "That tho council regrets its inability to accept any tender for tho erection of new council chambers."

The council consented to the closing of a road through the Makomako Block, containing a little over six acres, at the instance of the Public Works Department. A similar consent was registered to the proclaiming of n piece of land containing 1 acre 1 rood 7 perches a public road, giving access to the Mercury Bay wharf. A petition from settlers in the Kennedy Bay district, who are practically without an outlet for their produce, was endorsed and will be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works requesting improvmont of the grade of part of the Coromandel-Ken-nedy Bay Road, over the Tokatea saddle, and recommending its favourable consideration.

The Thames Valley Power Board is to be asked to furnish terms under which power would be supplied to the county. A Government grant of £3OO has been made to tho council for metalling and improving tho Coromandel-Whitianga Road. Specifications of the proposed work have been forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval, and on receipt of this by the council tenders will be invited.
