DESTRUCTION OF BUSH.
SETTLERS' HARD FIGHT. BIG BLAZE AT MARERETU. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAPAROA, Saturday. The neighbouring district of Mareretu has suffered heavily the last few days through bush fires. Starting on the eastern side of the district in a Government reserve near the ranges separating Mareretu and Waipu, the flames swept the ranges and burnt much green bush on the reserve, on a front of between four and five miles.
The chief damage was done to Mr. Allan VYorthington's farm by the destruction of green bush and to the property of Taaka, a Maori, where a large stretch of grass and fencing was burnt. The settlers. at Paparoa and Maungaturoto, with the assistance of local people, numbering from 30 to 40, fought the fire, and they anticipated that it would be under control last night. No stock was lost.
On Thursday another fire on ths opposite side of the district severely damaged Mr. E. A. Cliff's property. The fire began at one o'clock and continued till about 8 p.m. before a gang of willing helpers got it under control. About 200 acres of bush and of pasture land were burnt, soma of which had been reserved for winter feed. The fences were saved.
