FORGERY AND UTTERING.
ENGINE CLEANER'S OFFENCE. ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN MONEY. [BY TELEGRAPIT. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HAWERA, Wednesday. In the Police Court, before Justices of the Peace, Gilbert Henry Death, aged 23, a railway engine cleaner, pleaded guilty to a charge of forging and uttering the name of J. F. Lovell, a fellow-employee, to a Post Office Savings Bank withdrawal receipt for £4O- - was given that accused, who was married and had two children, found the hook and attempted to draw the amount mentioned from the Hawera post office. A question by the clerk over the signature caused him to disappear hurriedly. Ho made a confession when arrested. The action of the post office oflicial in frustrating the attempt to secure the money was commended by the Bench. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. To a further charge of tlieft. of two gallons of benzine, Death pleaded guilty, ile was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
