GIRLS' SCHOOL HOSTEL.
BUILDING AT NEW PLYMOUTH OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday. A new boarding establishment for the New Plymouth Girls' High School, erected at a cost of £23,900, on a property known as Scotlands, adjoining the school grounds, Mangorei Road, was officially opened today by the Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister of Education. The building is on an admirable site, comprising 16£ acres of land, which is being laid out in recreation grounds, ornamental gardens and kitchen gardens for supply to the establishment. It is a two-storey building of Americancolonial design. In performing the opening ceremony, the Minister paid a tribute to the former pupils of the school for their efforts, extending over several years, by which the sum of £2500 was raised, carried a subsidy of a similar amount, while the Government provided £18,900 on condition that the Board of Governors repaid £SOO a year to the department for a period of five years, commencing from this year. He also referred to the homely atmosphere of the hostel in which he said the domestic science course, or in plain English, cookery, was to form an important subject. Other speakers acknowledged help and consideration given to the scheme by the Minister. The chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, Mr. S. G. Smith, mentioned as an instance of the widespread interest in Taranaki in education and the welfare of children, that during the past 10 years voluntary contributions and special efforts had provided money for educational purposes at an average rata of £3OOO a year.
