BATHER LOSES LIFE.
COLLAPSE JN BATHS. WANGANUI BOY'S DEATH. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, Wednesday. Resuscitation methods applied for three hours with utmost diligence failed to revive Grah ;in Barstow, aged 12, son of Mr. N. C. Barstow, local manager of the South British Insurance Company, when he collapsed in the swimming baths this afternoon. The boy went with a party of boys from his school. He could not swim, but was at the deep end, using an inflated motor-car tyre tube for support, when he apparently fainted or lost his hold on the tube and sank. No one saw him actually go down, but he was soon missed, and was brought to the surface unconscious by another boy. The caretaker and others commenced resuscitation attempts, and within five minutes a doctor joined them. The latter worked for three hours without a break, but, although the boy's heart still beat, efforts to effect respiration proved fruitless. It is stated by swimmers at the baths Ifchat the boy could not have been under more than three minutes.
