OIL FROM RUSSIA.
DISPUTE BETWEEN FIRMS. INDICATION OF SETTLEMENT. (Received January 31, 6.25 p.m.) A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. Jan. 30. While no official statement has been made, it is considered in oil circles in New York that the announcement of the departure of Sir Henri Deterding, of tho Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, for America, indicates an early settlement of the oil dispute. The officials of the Standard Oil Company have declined to comment on the matter. It was reported in July that Sir Henri Deterding, director-general of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, and director of the Shell Transport and Trading Companv, Ltd., had issued a statement attacking the policy of the Standard Oil Company of New York and the Vacuum Oil Company, which have contracts under which they purchase oil from Russia. The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey announced that it would riot deal with the Soviet, and that in conjunction with the Roval Dutch Petroleum Company and the Shell Company it had agreed to a joint policy of not dealing with Russia until the owners of the oilfields in Russia were compensated.
