MOTORING MISHAPS.
CAR FALLS OVER BANK. PASSENGERS NOT INJURED. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MORRINSVILLE. Tuesday. Through failure of the steering gear, a. car driven by Mr. E. Gummer, of Morrinsville, and containing five passengers, including Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Gummer, went over a bank on the road to Waihi yesterday The passengers were thrown out, but fortunately the car was not travelling quickly at the time and no one was injured. The car was badly damaged. Considerable damage was done to the front portion of a car driven by Mr, W. Grigg, of Morrinsville, when a motorcycle ridden by a youth, H. W. Wilton, collided with it on the main. road, near Hinuera. The cycle was not damaged. MOTOR LOSSY WRECKED. OCCUPANTS ESCAPE LIGHTLY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ■ THAMES. Tuesday. An accident occurred on the Hauraki Plains last evening when a motor-lorry owued by Messrs. Penno and Currant, of Thames, driven by Mr. Penno, and containing four passengers, was precipitated into a 7ft. ditch near the Pipiroa ferry through a tyre coming off one of the rear wheels. The passengers escaped with minor scratches and bruises, but the driver was gashed across the thigh. The lorry was completely wrecked. A DBOS» OF TEN FEET. COLLAPSE OF ROADWAY. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHAKATANE, Tuesday. When attempting to pass another car on the Whakatane-Rotorua Road, a fiveseater motor-car, owned and driven by Mr. G. S. Whiteside, of Whakatane, was hurled down a 10-foot bank by the collapse of the edge of the xoadway. The car was proceeding from Eotorua to Whakatane at the time of the accident and when skirting the shore of Lake Rotoma met another car, which stopped. Mr. Whiteside also stopped, but when he began to pass on the outside of the road the edge of the bank gave way and the car capsized into the lake, coming to rest upside down. In addition to Mr. Whiteside there were three occupants in the car, Mrs. Whiteside, their son, George, and Mrs. Shaw, of Stoke, Nelson. All escaped serious injury, Mrs. Whiteside receiving a cut oii the hand, which required the insertion of stitches on arrival at Whakatane. ]/r. Whiteside was submerged in the vehicle for some little time, but the other members of the, party made their way to safety without difficulty. The .other motor-car proceeded on to Rotorua to bring help. Soon after the accident a road-grader arrived on the spot and hauled Mr. Whiteside's car back on to the road.
